Drive to Thrive

The journey and detailed plan to deliver Yorkshire Waters strategy and reach the vision.

Challenge

Yorkshire Water is responsible for providing essential water services to over 5 million customers across the region. As part of a transformational change for the business, I helped launch Yorkshire Water’s 10-year strategy, communicating to over 8,000 employees as they all work towards delivering the new vision – ‘A thriving Yorkshire: right for customers, right for the environment.'

Insight

The water industry is experiencing a difficult period, facing adverse media coverage and many operational challenges. The organisation already had an amazing sense of pride and passion amongst colleagues, but engagement scores were declining post-pandemic. Yorkshire Water needed to re-engage and inspire colleagues to ensure they believed in the new strategy and saw a positive future ahead.

Solution

Using a storytelling approach to set the context, bringing the strategy to life in a way colleagues could get on board with. I helped crafted the narrative and developed Drive to Thrive as the plan for delivering the strategy, clearly setting out what the next five years would look like. It was launched initially to senior and people leaders, then cascaded to their teams so everyone understood the vital role they would play in achieving the vision.

Internal communications

The ‘drive to thrive’ plan was launched at an in-person event of 800 senior and people leaders. The narrative was told across a variety of digital and printed communications, and a series of workshops allowed people leaders to shape the plan for their teams and areas of the business.

Celebrating employees success 

The ‘drive to thrive’ awards recognise colleagues who embrace the plan and display one or more of the four Yorkshire Water behaviours, demonstrating their commitment to delivering the strategy. We created pre-award comms, bespoke awards, pin badges, certificates and branding at the event.

I created a toolkit of assets and guidelines for ‘drive to thrive’, giving people leaders the tools they require to communicate with their teams and ensure a consistent campaign look and feel across all communications.
